Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti urged patience after his side opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Morocco in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday. The five-time world champions struggled to find their rhythm for large parts of the contest and were forced to come from behind after Morocco took an early lead. Despite the disappointing result, Ancelotti insisted it was too early to judge his team's prospects in the tournament.
Morocco stunned Brazil when Ismael Saibari found the net in the opening stages, putting the South American giants under immediate pressure. The goal raised the prospect of Brazil suffering their first opening-match defeat at a World Cup since 1934. However, Vinicius Junior produced a moment of quality to restore parity, scoring a well-taken equaliser that ensured Brazil avoided defeat and collected a point from their first group-stage fixture.
Speaking after the match, Ancelotti acknowledged that his players appeared nervous and struggled to settle into the game. The Italian manager said the occasion may have affected the team's performance but stressed that World Cup campaigns are not defined by the opening match. He maintained that Brazil would continue to improve as the tournament progresses and expressed confidence that the squad would respond positively in the coming fixtures.

Ancelotti reserved special praise for Vinicius Junior, who once again delivered when his team needed him most. The Brazil coach said the Real Madrid forward has all the qualities required to enjoy a successful World Cup and lead the team's attack. Vinicius is expected to play an even more influential role during the tournament, particularly while Neymar continues his recovery from a calf injury that ruled him out of the opening match.
The 25-year-old forward, however, admitted Brazil's performance fell below expectations. Vinicius said the team started poorly and found it difficult to recover after conceding the opening goal. He emphasised that improvement would be essential if Brazil hopes to challenge for the title, noting that every match at a World Cup presents a significant challenge regardless of the opponent.
Morocco, meanwhile, took considerable encouragement from the result against one of football's most successful nations. Captain Achraf Hakimi praised his teammates' effort and performance, while coach Mohamed Ouahbi expressed satisfaction with the point despite believing his side could have secured victory. The draw reinforced Morocco's reputation as a formidable international team and suggested the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists could once again emerge as serious contenders on football's biggest stage.
