Aston Villa will look to draw inspiration from the club’s historic European triumphs as they prepare to face SC Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday. The English side heads into the showdown aiming to end a 30-year wait for a major trophy and secure its first European title since the famous 1982 European Cup victory. The final at Istanbul’s Beşiktaş Stadium marks Villa’s first appearance in a major European final in more than four decades.
Villa players and supporters have been revisiting memories of the club’s iconic victory over FC Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final, where a decisive goal from Peter Withe sealed a famous win. Current Villa striker Ollie Watkins said he planned to watch footage of Withe’s historic goal as motivation before the final. Watkins praised the former striker’s legacy and highlighted the value of having club legends remain closely connected to the squad during important moments in the season.
The years following Villa’s European glory were marked by inconsistency and setbacks, including relegations from the top flight in 1987 and 2016. The club also endured heartbreak in domestic finals, failing to win another major trophy after lifting the League Cup in 1996. However, Villa’s fortunes have changed significantly under manager Unai Emery, who has transformed the side into one of England’s strongest teams since arriving in 2022.

Under Emery’s leadership, Aston Villa reached the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals last season and currently sit fourth in the Premier League with one match remaining. Their impressive Europa League campaign has also attracted support from prominent fans, including Prince William, a longtime Villa supporter who joined celebrations after the club’s dominant semi-final victory over Nottingham Forest. A triumph in Istanbul would further strengthen Emery’s remarkable record in European competitions.
The Spaniard is already regarded as one of the most successful managers in Europa League history, having won the tournament three times with Sevilla FC and once with Villarreal CF. Emery has repeatedly emphasized that Villa’s current progress is part of a long-term project designed to establish the club among Europe’s elite sides. He said the team’s recent performances, including qualification for next season’s Champions League, reflect the high standards and ambition being built within the squad.
Villa enter the final as favorites against Freiburg, who are appearing in their first-ever European final after an impressive campaign in Germany and Europe. Emery acknowledged that last season’s painful UEFA Conference League semifinal defeat to Olympiacos F.C. played a crucial role in preparing his players for bigger challenges. The manager said those setbacks formed part of the club’s development process and insisted Aston Villa is now focused on maintaining consistency at the highest level while creating a new chapter in the club’s European history.
