Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer has opened up about the popular “Sarpanch” tag given to him by fans, admitting that he was initially unaware of its meaning before embracing it as a symbol of leadership within the team.
Speaking on JioStar’s show Believe, Iyer said he was “clueless” when he first heard the nickname after joining the Punjab Kings. The batter revealed that he later learned from teammates that “Sarpanch” refers to the head of a village or community, which helped him understand the intent behind the title and the responsibility it represents.
The term has since become closely associated with Iyer’s leadership style at Punjab Kings, where he has earned praise for both his tactical approach and consistent performances. Under his captaincy, the team has built strong momentum in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026, remaining unbeaten in the early stages of the tournament.

On the field, Iyer has been in impressive form, scoring 203 runs in four innings at a striking average of 67.67 and a blistering strike rate of 187.96. His aggressive batting has included 14 sixes and an equal number of fours, highlighting his impact in the middle order and his ability to accelerate innings when required.
Punjab Kings currently sit at the top of the points table with nine points from five matches, further strengthening their reputation as one of the strongest teams this season. Their only non-result came from a washed-out match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, with both teams sharing a point.
The franchise has also benefited from the strong form of opener Prabhsimran Singh, who has contributed 211 runs so far in the season at a remarkable average and strike rate. His partnership at the top has provided Punjab Kings with explosive starts, complementing Iyer’s leadership in the middle order.
As the season progresses, Punjab Kings will look to maintain their unbeaten run, with Iyer’s leadership and batting form continuing to play a central role in their campaign.
