Kolkata Knight Riders' iconic all-rounder Andre Russell announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League on Sunday, transitioning to the franchise's support staff as Power Coach for the 2026 season. The 37-year-old West Indian, who played 140 IPL matches since joining KKR in 2014 after debuting with Delhi Daredevils, amassed 2,651 runs at a strike rate over 170—including 12 fifties—and claimed 123 wickets with one five-wicket haul. He secured two IPL titles (2014, 2024) and earned MVP honors in 2015 and 2019.
Russell cited perfect timing to bow out at his peak, avoiding a fade-out while leaving a legacy. "I don't want to fade out; I want to leave when fans say you have more in you," he stated in a video message. Speculation about him in other jerseys disturbed him, prompting sleepless nights, but discussions with KKR CEO Venky Mysore and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan solidified his decision. He will continue in global T20 leagues and other Knight Riders franchises.
Shah Rukh Khan penned a heartfelt X post calling Russell the "Knight in shining armour" for the purple squad. "Thank you for the wonderful memories... Your contribution to @KKRiders is one for the books... Here's to another chapter as Power Coach – passing down the wisdom, the muscle, and the power," SRK wrote, adding "Muscle Russell for life!" The tribute highlighted Russell's 12-year impact shortly after KKR released him ahead of the 2026 auction.

The announcement follows Russell's international T20 retirement in July 2025, focusing on franchise cricket amid fitness concerns at age 37. KKR's INR 12 crore retention last year freed purse space, but his return in a coaching role maintains family ties. Fans celebrate his explosive legacy while anticipating his mentorship for young finishers.
