Chennai Super Kings suffered a crushing 89-run defeat against Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 encounter, a result that officially ended their playoff hopes. Chasing a daunting target of 230, CSK were bundled out for 140 in just 13.4 overs, marking their heaviest defeat by runs in IPL history. The loss at Ahmedabad underlined a season of inconsistency and missed opportunities for the five-time champions.
CSK’s campaign followed a volatile pattern — a poor start, a brief resurgence, and a late collapse. After losing their first three matches, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side bounced back strongly with six wins that briefly reignited playoff hopes. However, three consecutive defeats at the business end of the season sealed their fate, ending their qualification chances despite flashes of strong form earlier in the tournament.
Reflecting on the defeat, Gaikwad acknowledged that the game slipped away early due to underwhelming execution with the ball. “When you are chasing 230, it’s not easy against that bowling attack. Our bowling wasn’t good in the powerplay. We had chances to restrict them under 200 but failed,” he said, stressing that CSK were always under pressure after the early damage. He also noted that chasing such a total against quality opposition made recovery difficult once momentum shifted.

The skipper further pointed to injuries and inexperience as key factors in CSK’s decline. Players like Ramakrishna Ghosh and Jamie Overton missed crucial games, disrupting balance in the side. Gaikwad highlighted that over eight players had limited IPL experience, calling it a transitional phase for the franchise. He also acknowledged the departure of experienced names such as Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu, while backing emerging players like Dewald Brevis and Urvil Patel.
The match also reignited discussion around the future of MS Dhoni, who did not feature in any game this season. Gaikwad remained cautious when asked about Dhoni’s plans, stating that clarity would come only next year while acknowledging his value as a late-order game-changer. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, captain of Gujarat Titans, credited his bowlers for maintaining disciplined lengths and restricting CSK under pressure, describing his own batting performance as something he would still look to improve.
