Punjab Kings suffered their sixth consecutive defeat in IPL 2026 after going down to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 23 runs in Dharamsala on Sunday, dealing a major blow to their playoff hopes. Following the loss, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer was seen engaged in a serious discussion with team co-owner Preity Zinta on the field.
Batting first, Bengaluru posted a strong total of 222 for 4 in 20 overs after explosive contributions from Venkatesh Iyer and Virat Kohli. Venkatesh remained unbeaten on 73, while Kohli struck a quick half-century to put pressure on the Punjab bowling attack. Punjab struggled to contain the scoring rate during the powerplay and middle overs, allowing RCB to build momentum throughout the innings.
In reply, Punjab Kings lost wickets at regular intervals despite late resistance from Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis. Shashank smashed 56 off 27 balls, while Stoinis contributed 37 from 25 deliveries, but the hosts eventually finished on 199 for 8. Rasikh Salam Dar picked up three wickets for Bengaluru, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed two key dismissals.

Speaking after the match, Shreyas admitted that the contest slipped away during the powerplay. He said RCB’s aggressive start made a major difference and acknowledged that Punjab were unable to pick up enough wickets to control the innings. The skipper also expressed disappointment over losing early wickets during the chase, especially after consistent strong starts from opening batters Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya earlier in the tournament.
The defeat further complicates Punjab Kings’ playoff qualification chances, with the team now under pressure to reverse its form quickly. Television visuals after the match showed a visibly disappointed Punjab camp, including members of the coaching staff, while the interaction between Shreyas and Preity Zinta drew attention from fans on social media amid the franchise’s ongoing losing streak.
Despite the setback, Shreyas remained optimistic about the remainder of the campaign and said the team would move on quickly ahead of its next match against Lucknow Super Giants. “This is over, this is gone. Tomorrow again I'm going to see the sunrise and there's always light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.
