Pakistan opener Ayesha Zafar has played down the buildup to her side's high-profile Women's Asia Cup 2026 clash against India, describing the fixture as "just another match" despite the intense scrutiny that traditionally surrounds any India-Pakistan cricket contest. Speaking to the media in Dubai on Thursday ahead of the encounter, Zafar said, "Yes, it is India vs Pakistan, but this is just another match. We are trying to take the matches day by day," signalling her team's intent to approach the game with a measured, low-key mindset rather than treating it as an occasion apart from the rest of the tournament.

The remark comes at an important juncture for both sides in the group stage of the tournament, being played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. India have already secured their place in the semi-finals following two commanding victories, while Pakistan still have work to do, needing at least one win from their two remaining matches to confirm qualification. Although a defeat to India would not be fatal to Pakistan's chances given their favourable position elsewhere in the group, matches between the two nations invariably attract disproportionate attention regardless of the tournament context, making Zafar's composed remarks notable.

Pakistan enter the fixture on the back of a solid start to their campaign, having defeated Thailand by 35 runs in their opening match, posting a total of 119 built around a half-century from Muneeba Ali after an early stumble in the batting powerplay, backed up by a disciplined bowling performance. Zafar noted that the team's preparation has not been confined to a single discipline, saying, "We cannot specifically focus on one thing, overall we have focused on all three," while highlighting fielding as an area of particular emphasis in training. She added that the coaching staff had stressed the importance of fielding standards, saying it was something that could win matches on its own.

Ahead of the match, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly visited the squad in Dubai to offer encouragement, with Zafar recalling that he had urged the players to focus on their performance regardless of the eventual result. "He encouraged us, and told us to put up a good show regardless of winning or losing," she said, reflecting a broader message from the team management aimed at easing pressure on the squad ahead of one of the tournament's most closely watched fixtures. With both teams having navigated hot and humid conditions in Dubai throughout the group stage, Zafar acknowledged the challenge posed by the weather but expressed confidence that Pakistan were well prepared to compete, adding that the team was fully focused on producing its best cricket rather than being consumed by the weight of the rivalry.
