The much-anticipated comeback of Jasprit Bumrah for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in its IPL 2025 clash against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium last night was uneventful.
And that is good news.
The star fast bowler did not show any major discomfort, which is the most crucial thing, as Bumrah's fitness is key to India's winning chances in England later this year.
After being sidelined for months due to a lower back stress injury, Bumrah returned to action with a disciplined bowling display at Wankhede against RCB. There was no visible strain due to the wear and tear of a major rehabilitation process. The man with the golden arm looked in prime fitness, if not form. as he bowled his full complement of four overs
Though he went wicketless last night, his bowling figures --- 4 overs, 29 runs --- were impressive in the context of the match and MI attack. At 7.25 runs per over, he was the most economical of the seven MI bowlers on view.
Bumrah showcased his trademark accuracy and ability to handle pressure. He mixed his pace effectively and fired in yorkers, limiting the RCB batters to singles for most of his overs. Bumrah conceded a six to Virat Kohli but quickly regained control, focusing on tight lines and variations. In the 18th and 20th overs, Bumrah gave away only 14 runs combined, including a six, demonstrating his skill in containing runs during critical phases.
For the record, RCB batted first and posted a formidable total of 221/5, thanks to stellar contributions from Virat Kohli (67 off 42 balls) and Rajat Patidar (64 off 32 balls). MI's chase fell short by 12 runs, despite a valiant effort from Hardik Pandya (42 off 15 balls) and Tilak Varma (50 off 26 balls). Bumrah's disciplined bowling helped MI stay in contention during the slog overs.
While Bumrah's numbers were secondary, his return was a morale booster for MI, who will hope his presence will turn around its dwindling fortunes in the season.
