Lucknow Super Giants briefly found themselves at the centre of a controversy during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings after a viral television clip appeared to show an individual using a mobile phone inside the dugout area at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. The visuals sparked widespread speculation on social media over a possible breach of BCCI anti-corruption and communication protocols.
The incident occurred during the opening over of the match when broadcast cameras captured the individual shortly after a boundary struck by Josh Inglis off a delivery bowled by Akeal Hosein. The clip circulated rapidly online, with fans and viewers questioning whether the act violated IPL regulations governing the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA).
Under IPL PMOA rules framed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, mobile phones and other electronic communication devices are prohibited within designated match-related zones. These restricted areas include dressing rooms, dugouts, match officials’ rooms, viewing areas and other sections monitored by the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security unit. The rules are designed to prevent unauthorised communication and maintain the integrity of the competition.

The guidelines do permit certain approved electronic devices during matches, but only under strict conditions. Such devices may be operated solely by designated team analysts from authorised analyst stations within approved areas. Any unauthorised usage inside the PMOA can potentially trigger scrutiny from anti-corruption officials.
However, the controversy later lost momentum after clarifications emerged suggesting that the individual shown on camera was not actually seated inside the LSG dugout or within the restricted PMOA zone. Reports indicated that the person was positioned elsewhere in the stadium, meaning the alleged violation did not fall under the IPL’s communication restrictions. The exact seating location, however, could not be independently verified.
The episode nevertheless generated considerable debate online and highlighted the heightened scrutiny surrounding anti-corruption protocols in the IPL. With the league maintaining strict monitoring standards around electronic communication during matches, even brief visuals captured on broadcast feeds can quickly trigger speculation among fans and observers.
