Sanjiv Goenka, owner of Lucknow Super Giants, has dismissed speculation of a rift with Team Captain Rishabh Pant, stating that he has been unfairly portrayed amid intense scrutiny during the Indian Premier League 2026. Addressing the controversy, Goenka remarked that constant media attention has made him a “punching bag", adding that several narratives circulating online are exaggerated or misleading.
The controversy emerged after video clips went viral showing Goenka in an animated discussion with Pant following one of the team’s early defeats this season. The visuals sparked widespread speculation among fans and analysts, with many interpreting the exchange as a sign of tension between the franchise owner and the captain. However, Goenka clarified that such interactions are often taken out of context.
The situation also revived memories of a similar incident in 2024, when Goenka was seen having a stern conversation with former skipper KL Rahul after a loss. That episode had drawn criticism at the time, with questions raised about the role of franchise owners in on-field matters. The recurrence of such visuals has contributed to ongoing debates about team management dynamics in the league.

Pant, who was acquired for a record ₹27.50 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, was later appointed captain, replacing Rahul. Despite high expectations, the team’s performance has remained inconsistent. Lucknow Super Giants failed to qualify for the playoffs last season and have struggled to find form in the current campaign.
So far in IPL 2026, the franchise has recorded three defeats in its first five matches, placing it eighth in the standings. The underwhelming results have intensified scrutiny on both leadership and team strategy, further amplifying reactions to on-field and off-field developments involving the team’s management.
Speaking in a recent interview with NDTV, Goenka rejected claims of any discord with Pant, insisting that the alleged rift is a creation of social media speculation. He reiterated that internal discussions are a normal part of team operations and should not be misinterpreted, especially during a high-pressure tournament like the IPL.
