Kolkata Knight Riders have officially released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season, following a direct instruction from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The franchise confirmed the development in a statement, emphasizing that the decision was made in compliance with the BCCI as the league's regulator.
The BCCI's directive, announced by secretary Devajit Saikia on January 3, 2026, cited "recent developments" as the reason for requiring KKR to part ways with the left-arm seamer. The board has assured the franchise that it will be permitted to sign a replacement player under existing IPL regulations to maintain squad balance.
Rahman's inclusion had sparked significant controversy following reports of targeted violence against the Hindu minority community in Bangladesh during December 2025, including incidents of lynching and arson linked to blasphemy allegations. Political and public criticism intensified, with objections raised over the participation of Bangladeshi players amid strained bilateral relations.

The 30-year-old pacer was acquired by KKR for a record Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction held in December 2025, outbidding Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals after starting from a base price of Rs 2 crore. This made him the most expensive Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history.
An experienced IPL campaigner, Rahman has taken 65 wickets in 60 matches at an economy rate of 8.13 since debuting in 2016. He has previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings, contributing significantly to multiple franchises over the years.
