Three-time IPL Champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to approach the IPL 2026 Auction with a dramatically revamped strategy under their newly-appointed head coach Abhishek Nayar. The franchise has surprised many with bold release decisions, most notably parting ways with Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for an enormous ₹23.75 crore in the previous auction. The move has freed significant purse space, giving KKR greater flexibility as they rebuild their squad for the upcoming season.
Former India cricketer and JioStar expert Saba Karim believes the release may be part of a calculated plan rather than a complete separation. According to him, KKR could attempt to buy back Iyer at a much lower price in the mini-auction, capitalizing on his decreased market valuation. Karim emphasized that such bold resets are characteristic of coach Abhishek Nayar, who prefers retaining only those players he sees as indispensable to a winning core and repurchasing others to maintain roster balance.
The franchise’s decision not to retain wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz further clarifies their priorities for the auction. Karim noted that KKR is likely targeting a new opener, ideally someone who can also take on the wicketkeeping role to add flexibility to the lineup. Additionally, the team is actively searching for a powerful lower middle-order hitter, a gap they view as critical to addressing in the 2026 mini-auction to maintain the aggressive brand of cricket seen in recent seasons.

Venkatesh Iyer’s IPL journey has been a mix of brilliance and inconsistency. He made a sensational debut in 2021, smashing 370 runs in just ten matches and playing a key role in KKR’s run to the final. He replicated the same run tally during KKR’s title-winning 2024 season, reaffirming his value to the side. However, his form dipped significantly in 2025, managing only 142 runs from 11 games, which likely contributed to the team’s decision to release him.
Despite this downturn, the possibility of a buyback highlights the faith KKR still has in Iyer’s potential and versatility. With Nayar leading a fresh strategic overhaul, the franchise appears focused on rebuilding a squad capable of long-term stability and immediate impact. As anticipation builds ahead of the IPL 2026 Auction, KKR’s aggressive reshaping suggests that major surprises may still be in store, keeping fans and analysts eagerly watching their next move.
