The Karnataka cabinet accepted Justice John Michael D’Cunha’s report investigating the tragic stampede near Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which claimed 11 lives and injured several others.
The report, commissioned by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on June 5, prompted the cabinet to initiate legal action against private entities involved in organizing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration, including RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and DNA Entertainment Networks, as announced by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil.
The stampede occurred during a chaotic victory parade following RCB’s successful IPL campaign, with a massive crowd overwhelming security measures outside the stadium. The D’Cunha report identified negligence and pinpointed responsible parties, leading to the cabinet’s decision to pursue legal accountability.
Additionally, a departmental inquiry will probe the role of involved officers. Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and Additional Commissioner (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash were suspended in the aftermath, reflecting the state’s commitment to addressing the tragedy’s fallout and preventing future incidents.
