Royal Challengers Bengaluru sealed the top spot in the IPL 2026 league standings despite suffering a 55-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-scoring clash on Friday. The result confirmed the Qualifier 1 lineup, with RCB set to face Gujarat Titans, while SRH were pushed into the Eliminator despite all three teams finishing level on 18 points.
Sunrisers Hyderabad once again showcased their ultra-aggressive batting approach, piling up a massive 255/4 after explosive contributions from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. Abhishek smashed 56 off just 22 balls, including another 20-ball half-century, while Kishan anchored the innings with a fluent 79. Klaasen then tore into the RCB bowling attack with a brutal 51 off 24 deliveries, including a destructive assault on Josh Hazlewood.
Despite the daunting target, Bengaluru approached the chase with qualification mathematics firmly in mind. RCB only needed to cross 166 to secure a top-two finish and guarantee two opportunities to reach the IPL final. They eventually finished on 200/4, comfortably achieving the required benchmark even though victory was never realistically within reach after early wickets of Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal.

A crucial 84-run partnership between captain Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya ensured RCB stayed comfortably ahead in the Net Run Rate battle. Krunal remained unbeaten on 41 as RCB closed the innings without panic despite the heavy defeat.
The final standings saw RCB finish with a Net Run Rate of +0.783, ahead of Gujarat Titans (+0.695) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (+0.524), even though all three teams ended on 18 points. As a result, RCB and Gujarat Titans will now meet in Qualifier 1, with the winner advancing directly to the IPL 2026 final.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, will play in the Eliminator against the eventual fourth-placed side. The final playoff berth remains undecided, with Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals still mathematically in contention for the last remaining knockout spot.
