The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is officially set to begin on March 28, broadcaster Star Sports confirmed on Sunday. The announcement comes just ahead of the India vs New Zealand ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marking the return of India’s most popular cricket tournament. While the IPL fixtures are yet to be fully released, cricket fans across the country are eagerly awaiting the start of the six-week extravaganza.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the defending champions, are set to play the majority of their home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, with five confirmed games including the IPL 2026 final. Two additional home matches will be held at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. RCB clinched the 2025 title by defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in a thrilling final at Ahmedabad, giving their fans high hopes for a repeat performance this season.
Earlier this month, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) secretary Santosh Menon confirmed the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium would host five home games and the final, highlighting the extensive preparations and infrastructure upgrades that have taken place since the venue was closed following the IPL 2025 celebrations. The stadium had been shut after a stampede during RCB’s title celebration in June 2025, which tragically claimed 11 lives and left several injured.

RCB’s management expressed gratitude to the Government of Karnataka, KSCA, and the Karnataka Police for ensuring safety and operational readiness ahead of the tournament. “The collaborative efforts to ramp up infrastructure and implement safety protocols have been crucial in making the stadium match-ready again,” said RCB CEO Rajesh Menon. He added, “The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is more than just our home ground; it is where our identity as a team truly comes alive. The energy and passion our fans bring to Bengaluru inspire our players through every phase of the game.”
Officials confirmed that the IPL 2026 season will see high-octane matches across multiple venues, with stringent safety and crowd management measures in place, particularly at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Fans can expect a blend of thrilling cricket, vibrant fan engagement, and extensive coverage on broadcast and digital platforms. The anticipation is high, with teams finalising their squads and strategies in the weeks leading up to the opening match.
The IPL 2026 promises to not only deliver cricketing excitement but also provide an opportunity for RCB to defend their title on home ground after last year’s tragedy. With five home matches in Bengaluru and two in Raipur, the team aims to balance fan engagement and player safety while setting the stage for a competitive tournament.
