Sourav Ganguly has addressed concerns over a possible conflict of interest arising from his appointment as Delhi Capitals head coach while continuing as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Ganguly said he has received an order from the BCCI ombudsman, indicating that he sees no issue with holding both positions as he prepares to take charge of the IPL franchise ahead of the 2027 season.
Speaking outside Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata after the India-Uruguay football friendly, Ganguly was asked about the conflict of interest debate surrounding his new role. “I've got the order of the ombudsman,” the former India captain said. He also expressed optimism about his new assignment, adding, “Delhi will play well. I'm looking forward to it.”
Ganguly has a long association with the Delhi Capitals franchise. He first joined the team as an advisor in 2019 while he was also serving as CAB president, with the BCCI clearing the arrangement at the time. He returned to the franchise as director of cricket in 2023 and held the position for two years while Ricky Ponting was the head coach. His latest appointment marks his first stint as the IPL team's head coach.

The former India captain is also involved with Delhi Capitals' sister franchise in the SA20. He currently serves as head coach of Pretoria Capitals and guided the South African team to the 2026 final, where they finished runners-up. His involvement with multiple roles across the Capitals group had added to the attention surrounding his latest appointment, particularly because of his position within CAB.
Ganguly's appointment comes as Delhi Capitals prepare for a new IPL campaign after missing the playoffs in the previous two seasons. The franchise also enters the season with changes to its squad, including the return of Rishabh Pant. The franchise is jointly owned by the GMR and JSW groups, which alternate control of its cricketing operations in two-year cycles. With GMR's cycle ending in 2026, JSW is set to oversee the team's cricketing affairs until 2029.
Ganguly will also take charge of the Delhi Capitals women's team in the Women's Premier League. His appointment as the men's team's head coach therefore adds another coaching responsibility to his existing roles. With Ganguly citing the BCCI ombudsman's order as the basis for his position on the conflict of interest question, attention will now shift to his work with Delhi Capitals as the franchise prepares for the 2027 IPL season.
