South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, currently representing Gulf Giants in the ongoing ILT20, spoke candidly about his experiences playing alongside and against India star Virat Kohli. Shamsi, who had brief stints with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, described Kohli as an intense competitor whose drive on the field is unmatched.
Reflecting on his time with Kohli at RCB, Shamsi said, “It’s always nice playing against Virat. He’s an intense character on the field. When he crosses the line, he goes into game mode and wants to beat you as badly as the opposition wants to beat him, if not more.” He emphasized that off the field, the two share a cordial relationship despite their contrasting on-field intensity.
Shamsi also highlighted the lessons learned from Kohli’s attitude and work ethic. “I personally respect the fight and the drive that he has. He’s one of the greats of the game, and you have to dig deep to appreciate his passion and commitment,” he added, acknowledging the influence of Kohli’s competitiveness on his own development as a player.

The spinner recounted his standout performance during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, particularly the thrilling Chennai match against Pakistan where he took four crucial wickets. “It was a nail-biter. I ended up at the crease at the end, and the victory was unforgettable,” Shamsi said, describing the electrifying atmosphere in front of the Chennai crowd.
Shamsi also praised South Africa’s leadership under Temba Bavuma, noting the captain’s quiet yet effective approach. “He doesn’t speak all the time, but when he does, everyone listens. His leadership has been brilliant, and it’s been special to be part of the team without experiencing heavy defeats,” he said, reflecting on the Proteas’ 2-0 Test series sweep against India.
Discussing his debut in the ILT20, Shamsi expressed excitement about joining Gulf Giants. “It’s a new league, and everything I’ve heard about Gulf Giants has been positive. The team is well-managed, and the people behind the scenes are amazing. I’m enjoying my first experience here,” he added, showing enthusiasm for this latest chapter in his cricketing career.
