Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for inclusion in India’s senior men’s team, following his explosive performance in the opening match of the Indian Premier League 2026.
Sooryavanshi played a decisive role in Rajasthan Royals’ emphatic eight-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings. After restricting Chennai to a modest total of 127, Rajasthan chased down the target in just 12.1 overs. The 15-year-old prodigy stole the spotlight with a blistering innings of 52 runs off just 17 deliveries, showcasing remarkable composure and power-hitting ability well beyond his years.
Impressed by the youngster’s performance, Vaughan suggested that India’s team management should include Sooryavanshi in the squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of England. While acknowledging that it may be too early to fast-track him into the playing XI, Vaughan emphasized the importance of exposing the teenager to the international environment. He noted that gaining experience within the national setup could accelerate Sooryavanshi’s development and prepare him for future challenges.

Vaughan also questioned whether the young cricketer would be eligible for international tours at his age but maintained that his talent warranted early exposure. According to him, even limited opportunities—such as featuring in one or two matches—would be beneficial, adding that the youngster has already demonstrated the skill required to compete at higher levels.
The teenager’s standout performance also drew praise from former India batter Mohammad Kaif, who admitted to revising his earlier opinion. Kaif said he had initially believed Sooryavanshi was being overhyped but now feels the Bihar-born cricketer is ready to take the next step in his career. He highlighted the player’s ability to deliver entertaining and match-winning performances at a remarkably young age.
Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise underscores the growing trend of young talent making an early impact in franchise cricket, particularly in high-profile tournaments like the IPL. With increasing calls from former players and experts, the young batter’s progress will be closely watched as selectors weigh the balance between nurturing emerging talent and maintaining stability in the national squad.
