New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert has spoken about the challenging playing conditions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk after his team began their T20 World Cup campaign with a victory. Seifert said the surface proved demanding for batters, requiring a measured and adaptable approach throughout the match.
Reflecting on the contest, Seifert described the conditions as “tough,” pointing to the nature of the pitch, which offered variable bounce and grip. He noted that batting was not straightforward, especially in the middle overs, and that shot selection became crucial as the ball aged. According to him, the team had anticipated difficult conditions but still needed time in the middle to adjust.
Seifert credited New Zealand’s bowlers for exploiting the surface effectively, saying they stuck to disciplined lines and lengths to build pressure on the opposition. He added that the bowlers’ ability to vary pace and use the pitch conditions played a significant role in restricting scoring opportunities and creating breakthroughs at key moments.

The wicketkeeper-batter also highlighted the importance of experience in Indian conditions, particularly at Chepauk, which is known for assisting spin and slower bowlers. He said players who were willing to adapt their game plans and remain patient were more likely to succeed, rather than relying solely on power hitting.
New Zealand’s win in their opening match has given the side early momentum in the tournament, but Seifert cautioned against complacency. He emphasised that the team understands conditions will continue to vary across venues and that flexibility will be essential as the competition progresses.
The comments underline the tactical challenges teams face in the T20 World Cup, especially in subcontinental conditions. With matches scheduled at traditionally demanding venues like Chepauk, players and teams are expected to place a premium on adaptability, execution, and smart decision-making as the tournament unfolds.
