Indian batters Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill gained valuable points in the latest ICC ODI rankings despite India losing their three-match ODI series against England. The strong performances from the top-order trio helped them improve their positions among the world’s leading ODI batters, although no Indian bowler managed to break into the top 10 rankings. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell continues to hold the No. 1 position in the ODI batting rankings with 802 rating points. However, Shubman Gill’s impressive performances in the series have brought him within touching distance of the top spot.

Gill scored 80 not out, 31 and 77 across the three ODIs at Edgbaston, Cardiff and Lord’s, taking his rating points close to Mitchell’s tally and leaving him just one point behind the New Zealand batter. Virat Kohli also strengthened his position after producing consistent performances during the series. The former India captain scored two half-centuries in three matches and now sits at 767 rating points in the ODI batting rankings. Despite facing questions over his recent form, Kohli’s ability to deliver crucial runs helped him maintain his place among the leading batters in world cricket.

Rohit Sharma also saw a rise in his ranking points after producing a memorable innings in the final ODI at Lord’s. The Indian captain scored a brilliant 138-run knock, boosting his career tally and taking his rating points to 758. His century was one of the few positives from India’s campaign in the series, although it came in a losing cause. While India dominated the upper half of the batting rankings, with three players among the top four, the team’s overall performance in the series remained disappointing. India won the opening ODI by six wickets but failed to maintain momentum, suffering defeats in the second and third matches at Cardiff and Lord’s.

The second ODI saw India’s batting lineup collapse under pressure, with only Kohli and newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer making significant contributions. The lack of support from the rest of the batting order prevented India from chasing down England’s target and allowed the hosts to level the series. In the final ODI at Lord’s, India’s chances were heavily affected after England posted a massive total of 387/3, taking advantage of the absence of premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Although Rohit Sharma’s century gave India hope during the chase, the team could not complete the pursuit and eventually lost the match.

The bowling rankings also highlighted a concern for India, as no Indian bowler featured among the top 10 ODI bowlers. The absence of Bumrah and inconsistent performances from the bowling unit contributed to India’s struggles against England’s aggressive batting lineup. Despite the series defeat, the improved rankings of Rohit, Kohli and Gill provide a positive sign for India’s ODI future. With major international tournaments ahead, the form of the top-order batters will remain crucial, while the team management will look to strengthen the bowling department to achieve better results in upcoming assignments.
