Ireland produced a commanding performance in Group B of the T20 World Cup, defeating Oman by 96 runs thanks to skipper Lorcan Tucker’s explosive 94 off 51 balls. Ireland recovered from a shaky 47 for 3 to post a formidable 235 for 5, their highest total in this edition, setting the stage for a one-sided encounter.
Tucker’s innings, featuring 10 fours and four sixes, was complemented by strong partnerships with Gareth Delany (56) and George Dockrell (35), the latter smashing five sixes in a nine-ball cameo. The pair added 171 runs in just 75 balls, completely turning the match in Ireland’s favour after an early collapse against Oman’s spinners.
Oman’s chase began with promise as veteran Aamir Kaleem (50) and Hammad Mirza (46) counterattacked, but wickets fell rapidly thereafter. Eight Omani batters were dismissed for single-digit scores, and the team was bowled out for 139 in 18 overs, with Josh Little leading the attack by taking 3 wickets for 16 runs.

Ireland’s bowlers maintained discipline throughout, with Matthew Humphreys (2/27), Barry McCarthy (2/32), and Dockrell (1/6) supporting Little. Oman’s early spin strategy had initially removed Tim Tector, Ross Adair, and Harry Tector, but once Tucker found his rhythm, the momentum decisively shifted toward Ireland.
Reflecting on his performance, Tucker credited patience and adaptation against spin for his success. “Had to put in a lot of work against spin early on. It was about keeping my tempo and capitalising on bad balls,” he said. The emphatic victory also provided Ireland a crucial boost to their Net Run Rate, which could be vital in the group standings.
The win leaves Ireland in fourth place in Group B, with Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Australia occupying the top three spots. Oman suffered their third consecutive loss, making qualification increasingly challenging. Ireland now look to build on this performance in their upcoming fixtures.
