India captain Suryakumar Yadav has downplayed the debate surrounding the pitch for the upcoming final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, stating that the Indian team is comfortable playing on any surface ahead of the title clash against the New Zealand national cricket team. Speaking on the eve of the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Suryakumar said the team has already adapted successfully to different pitch conditions throughout the tournament and remains focused on playing quality cricket rather than worrying about the nature of the surface.
The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium has been the subject of considerable discussion in the lead-up to the final, particularly over whether the surface will feature red soil or black soil. However, Suryakumar dismissed concerns and said his side has performed well on both types of pitches during the tournament. According to the Indian captain, the team’s preparation and adaptability matter more than the soil composition of the playing surface, especially in a high-pressure final where both teams are expected to bring their best strategies.
Suryakumar also revealed that he had not yet closely inspected the pitch before addressing the media. He said he came directly to the press conference from the dressing room and had not taken the opportunity to study the wicket in detail. Some members of the Indian team and support staff had already visited the pitch area, he noted, adding that the squad would assess conditions before the match but were confident of handling whatever surface was prepared.

The Indian skipper reiterated that the team has the ability to perform in different match situations, including both defending a total and chasing a target. During the tournament, India has secured victories in both scenarios, demonstrating flexibility in its approach. Suryakumar said the team’s focus remains on executing its plans effectively rather than dwelling on external discussions surrounding the pitch.
He also acknowledged the strengths of the New Zealand side, describing them as a tactical team known for careful planning and disciplined execution. According to Suryakumar, India expects a challenging contest in the final but remains determined to stick to its own strategy and maintain composure during the match.
The final represents a significant moment in Suryakumar’s captaincy career, as he leads India in one of the biggest matches of international T20 cricket. Having guided the team over the past two years, he now has the opportunity to secure a major world title and cement his leadership credentials, with the result of the match likely to become a defining chapter in his professional journey.
