India captain Suryakumar Yadav said he “felt good” going out to bat and playing to his strengths after a fiery cameo in India’s emphatic 48-run win over New Zealand in the first T20I on Wednesday. The victory gave India a 1–0 lead in the five-match series at the VCA Stadium.
Reflecting on his innings, Suryakumar credited his recent form to sustained hard work during net sessions. He said walking in under pressure felt natural and allowed him to express himself freely. “It was a good pressure situation, and I’ve been batting in those situations. I’ve been working really hard in the nets, and it came naturally,” he said after the match.
The India skipper also praised the batting unit’s resilience after the hosts were reduced to 25 for two in the powerplay. He said the team responded well to early setbacks, building partnerships through the middle overs and maintaining momentum until the end to post a daunting total.

Suryakumar reserved special praise for opener Abhishek Sharma, highlighting his preparation and mindset. He said Abhishek’s off-field discipline and focus were reflected in his performance on the field. “The way he prepares himself, the way he carries himself – all those small things show during the game,” Suryakumar noted.
Abhishek Sharma played a decisive role in the victory with a sensational knock of 84 off just 35 balls, smashing five fours and eight sixes. His aggressive approach at the top laid the foundation for India’s massive total and put New Zealand under sustained pressure throughout the innings.
India eventually posted an imposing score before restricting New Zealand to secure a comfortable 48-run win. With confidence high after the series opener, Suryakumar said the team would look to carry the momentum forward as they prepare for the remaining matches in the series.
