Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's much-anticipated debut for India's senior men's team will have to wait a little longer after the 15-year-old batting sensation was left out of the playing XI for the first T20I against England on Tuesday. Despite earning a place in the squad following a sensational Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign, the teenager was not included in India's lineup for the opening match of the five-game series, prompting former captain Sunil Gavaskar to weigh in on the youngster's delayed debut.
Speaking on Sony Sports, Gavaskar said the prolonged wait could increase expectations whenever Sooryavanshi eventually gets his chance. However, the batting legend believes the teenager's age and enthusiasm will help him cope with the added scrutiny. "It will put him under more pressure whenever he gets an opportunity. But at 15 years of age, you don't think too much about pressure. He knows that if he gets the opportunity in the second or third game, he will have to deliver almost immediately. That's there. But he is happy to be around. This Indian team is full of lovely, tremendous players, and it is just fantastic for him to be learning from them," Gavaskar said.
Sooryavanshi earned his maiden senior India call-up after an extraordinary IPL 2026 season in which he amassed 776 runs in just 16 innings and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP). His explosive performances established him as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket and made him a strong contender to open the batting during India's white-ball tour of Ireland and England. However, the team management has so far opted for experience, leaving the teenager waiting for his opportunity.

If Sooryavanshi debuts later in the series, he will rewrite several age-related records. At 15 years and 96 days, he would become the youngest player to appear in a top-tier men's T20 international, surpassing Ireland's Joshua Little, who made his debut at the age of 16 years and 309 days. He would also become the youngest player to represent India's senior men's cricket team, eclipsing the long-standing milestone set by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days in 1989 before making his ODI debut 33 days later. The overall record for the youngest men's international cricketer remains with Pakistan's Hasan Raza, who debuted in Test cricket at just 14 years and 227 days in 1996.
Meanwhile, India endured a shaky start in the opening T20I after arriving in England on the back of a 0-2 series defeat to Ireland. The visitors were reduced to 6 for 2 early in their innings before captain Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with a composed 68. Abhishek Sharma contributed a valuable 59, while Shivam Dube provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 42 off just 21 deliveries, helping India post a competitive total. England pacer Saqib Mahmood was the standout bowler, returning figures of 3 for 33 from his four overs. With four matches still to play, attention will remain firmly on whether India's management hands Sooryavanshi his much-awaited debut, a moment that could mark the beginning of a remarkable international career.
