Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has lauded Shubman Gill’s “unbelievable” leadership and batting prowess during India’s recent tour of England, where the 25-year-old captain led a young squad to a 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Test series. Speaking at the ‘50 Days To Go’ Women’s Cricket World Cup event, Yuvraj highlighted Gill’s remarkable achievement of scoring 754 runs, including four centuries, making him the first Asian batter to surpass 700 runs in a Test series in a SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) country.
Gill assumed captaincy following the retirement of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, navigating challenges like injuries to Rishabh Pant, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh, and limited appearances by Jasprit Bumrah. “There were question marks over his overseas record, but Gill took on the responsibility and delivered four Test hundreds,” Yuvraj told ICC Digital, calling the drawn series a “win” for the young team.
Yuvraj also praised the resilience of all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, whose century partnership secured a draw in the fourth Test at Manchester. “Washington’s performance as a youngster was incredible,” he noted. India’s tour culminated in a thrilling six-run victory in the fifth Test at The Oval, underscoring the team’s determination. Yuvraj, a mentor to Gill, emphasized the significance of the squad filling the void left by cricketing legends, cementing Gill’s emergence as a formidable leader.
