The BCCI announced India’s 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on December 20, 2025, during a press briefing at its Mumbai headquarters. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav addressed the media following the selection meeting, which also finalised the squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand.
The biggest shock from the announcement was the complete omission of Shubman Gill from the squad. Gill was not only removed from the vice-captaincy role but also dropped entirely, marking a significant shift in India’s T20 plans. The decision underlines the selectors’ emphasis on recent form and specific role clarity ahead of the global tournament.
Axar Patel has been named vice-captain, reflecting his rising stature in India’s white-ball setup. His consistent performances as a spin-bowling all-rounder, particularly in pressure situations, appear to have convinced the selectors of his leadership value. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the side as captain.
In the wicket-keeping department, Sanju Samson has been chosen as the first-choice option, while Ishan Kishan has made a surprise return after more than two years away from T20 internationals. Jitesh Sharma, however, has been left out, indicating a preference for experience and left-handed batting depth at the top.
Middle-order firepower has been strengthened with the inclusion of Rinku Singh, whose finishing abilities have impressed selectors in recent outings. Washington Sundar also finds a place in the squad, adding flexibility with his all-round skills. Notably, the selectors have opted not to name any standby players.
India head into the T20 World Cup 2026 as defending champions, having lifted the trophy in 2024 in the USA and West Indies. With the tournament set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026, the squad announcement marks a decisive first step in India’s quest to retain their world title under home and subcontinental conditions.
