With the 2026 T20 World Cup fast approaching, cricketing experts are speculating on India’s contingency plans in case star batter Tilak Varma is unable to participate. Varma, India’s preferred No. 3 since the 2024 T20 World Cup under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, recently underwent testicular torsion surgery and has been ruled out of the first three T20Is in the ongoing five-match series against New Zealand.
In Varma’s absence, Ishan Kishan batted at No. 3 during the series opener, showing versatility but not fully replicating Varma’s role. Former India pacer Varun Aaron weighed in on potential replacements for the World Cup, suggesting that while Kishan remains a viable internal option, a stronger strategic choice could come from outside the current squad.
Aaron specifically named ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer as the ideal replacement if India decides to draft a player beyond the existing T20 squad. Iyer’s experience and ability to stabilize the middle order, along with his leadership skills, make him a strong candidate to fill the gap left by Varma.

Tilak Varma’s consistent performances at No. 3 have been central to India’s batting strategy, particularly in high-pressure situations. Losing him for part or all of the T20 World Cup could impact India’s middle-order stability, prompting selectors to consider options that combine reliability with experience.
As the tournament, starting February 7, approaches, team management will closely monitor Varma’s recovery and fitness reports before finalizing the squad. Any official replacement is expected to be confirmed shortly after assessment, ensuring India fields its strongest possible lineup for the World Cup.
