India’s ODI captaincy transition and Rohit Sharma’s future in the format have become the focus of attention after speculation emerged about his international career. A viral video from Lord’s showed Rohit appearing to dismiss the ongoing discussions about his ODI future, telling India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak that the team is not concerned about external opinions.
The video surfaced ahead of India’s ODI series decider against England at Lord’s, following reports and social media speculation suggesting that the match could be Rohit’s final appearance in the format. In the clip, Rohit can be heard saying, “Hum log ko bahar kya chal raha hai, us se humko kya,” indicating that the team was focused on its preparations rather than outside discussions.
The speculation gained momentum during the second ODI in Cardiff, but the claims were later rejected by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. He clarified that the Lord’s ODI would not be Rohit’s last match for India in the format, putting an end to reports circulating online.

Rohit was also reportedly involved in discussions with selectors regarding his role in India’s future plans. Reports suggested that some members of the selection committee had concerns about his place in the team’s long-term strategy, while head coach Gautam Gambhir was also kept informed during discussions.
Despite the speculation, Rohit continued to be selected for India’s ODI assignments, including the series against England. The experienced batter remains one of India’s most successful ODI players, having scored more than 11,700 runs in the format and playing a key role in India’s campaign during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Rohit’s leadership and batting contributions have remained significant, including India’s title-winning campaign in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Although Shubman Gill has taken over as ODI captain following that achievement, Rohit continues to be regarded as an important senior member of the squad. His recent comments suggest that he remains focused on performances rather than speculation surrounding his future.
