The Korea Football Association has appointed former Spain coach Robert Moreno as interim head coach of the South Korean national football team following a disappointing World Cup campaign and continuing controversy surrounding the country’s football administration. Moreno will initially oversee the team during friendly matches scheduled for September and October. The appointment comes as the KFA seeks to stabilise the national side after a turbulent period that has intensified scrutiny of both the team and the association.

Moreno, who previously managed Spain, has been handed the temporary role after Hong Myung-bo left his position following South Korea’s shock group-stage exit from the World Cup in North America in June. Hong’s departure failed to ease public criticism of the team’s performance or concerns surrounding his appointment. The KFA has now opted for Moreno as it prepares the squad for its next major challenge, the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The association said Moreno could remain in charge through the Asian Cup, which is scheduled to take place from January 7 to February 5, but stressed that any continuation would be “subject to an evaluation” of his performance. This means the interim appointment could potentially become longer term if Moreno delivers satisfactory results and meets the expectations set by the football association. His immediate task will be to assess the squad and establish a stable approach during the upcoming international friendlies.

Moreno brings previous experience at international and club level, although his appointment also comes with scrutiny of his recent career. Earlier this year, he was forced to deny claims that he had used ChatGPT to prepare for matches during his coaching stint in Russia. The controversy adds another element to an appointment already being made under intense attention, although the KFA has chosen to place its focus on his coaching experience and ability to guide the national team through its current transition.

South Korean football has faced wider institutional criticism following the World Cup disappointment. The KFA headquarters was raided by police last month as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hong’s appointment in 2024. The association has also apologised over allegations that it provided preferential treatment during its recruitment and administrative processes. These developments have contributed to growing public dissatisfaction with the organisation at a time when the national team is attempting to rebuild.

Moreno’s immediate focus will be on preparing South Korea for its September and October friendlies and evaluating the players available to him before the Asian Cup. The tournament will provide a major test of whether the team can recover from its World Cup disappointment and restore confidence among supporters. With his position beyond the initial friendlies dependent on an assessment of his performance, Moreno has a limited period to demonstrate that he can provide the stability and results South Korea needs.
