India vice-captain Rishabh Pant has voiced strong concerns over the quality of the Dukes ball used in the ongoing Test series against England, describing its tendency to lose shape as unprecedented and detrimental to cricket. Speaking ahead of the third Test at Lord’s, starting Thursday, Pant highlighted the ball’s erratic behavior as a growing problem for players, with the series tied at 1-1.
“The ball is getting de-shaped too much. I’ve never seen it happen like this,” Pant told PTI, noting that the ball’s rapid softening limits bowlers’ effectiveness after the new-ball phase, forcing batters to constantly adjust. “It’s definitely irritating… every ball plays differently. It’s not good for cricket,” he added, humorously suggesting a smaller gauge for measuring balls. Frequent ball changes due to shape loss have been a recurring issue, with India captain Shubman Gill also raising concerns after India’s 336-run win at Edgbaston.
Pant remained unfazed by speculation about the Lord’s pitch, expected to challenge batters more than the flat tracks at Leeds and Edgbaston. “Whatever the condition, we’re fine with it,” he said, emphasizing India’s focus on taking 20 wickets regardless of the surface. He declined to confirm India’s bowling combination, saying the decision on two spinners or an extra pacer would be finalized Thursday, as pitch conditions could shift due to changes in moisture or color.

Reflecting on the quick turnaround from Edgbaston, Pant believes it will help India maintain momentum. He also praised the return of England’s Jofra Archer to Test cricket after four years, saying, “I’m happy for him.” On his dynamic with captain Gill, Pant highlighted their strong camaraderie, which he credits for India’s on-field cohesion. “When you have good camaraderie, it shows on the field. Hopefully, we can make the team one big unit,” he said.
As India prepares for a crucial Lord’s Test, Pant’s outspoken critique of the Dukes ball underscores broader concerns about equipment impacting the game’s quality, setting the stage for a high-stakes encounter.
