Rajasthan Royals (RR) are advancing plans to relocate their IPL 2026 home base from Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium to the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Gahunje, Pune, amid escalating tensions with the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). The franchise's operations team recently conducted a thorough recce of the venue, evaluating pitch conditions, seating capacity exceeding 37,000, hotel infrastructure, and airport connectivity along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This move stems from a bitter fallout last season, when an RCA official publicly accused RR of match-fixing—a claim the team vehemently denied and countered with demands for accountability. If approved by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), RR intends to host at least four of their seven home matches in Pune, with the remainder potentially shifting to Guwahati, where they have previously played select games.

The MCA, last hosting IPL fixtures in 2022 during the COVID-clustered edition, has expressed strong enthusiasm for reclaiming its spot on the T20 calendar. President Rohit Pawar is reportedly spearheading efforts to secure IPL's return, with officials confirming RR's interest and praising the franchise's proactive approach. "They were here to find out details about the capacity of the stadium and the nature of the pitches and hotels in the city," an MCA spokesperson told media outlets, underscoring Pawar's commitment to facilitating the shift. This development not only promises a revenue boost for the association but also revives Pune's vibrant cricket scene, known for its electric atmosphere and balanced pitches that have favored high-scoring thrillers in past outings.

Complicating matters, defending IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have also initiated talks with the MCA as a contingency for their beleaguered M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The venue was deemed unsafe following a tragic stampede on June 4, 2025, during victory celebrations that claimed several lives, prompting the Karnataka government to withhold hosting permissions amid ongoing safety upgrades. RCB's inquiries, though genuine, remain preliminary; the franchise has requested extensions until the IPL 2026 auction on December 16 in Abu Dhabi to assess resolutions at home. An MCA official described the scenario as "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," with RR poised to commit immediately versus RCB's larger brand appeal but higher uncertainty.
