Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has sparked fresh debate over India’s T20I team selection after commenting on the growing competition among Indian opening batters in IPL 2026. Speaking about the abundance of in-form openers, Ashwin remarked that the selectors were “lucky” that Virat Kohli had already retired from T20 internationals, as fitting all the current contenders into the squad would otherwise have become even more difficult.
Ashwin’s comments came amid a standout IPL season for Indian batters, with players such as Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivering consistent performances at the top of the order. The emergence of 15-year-old Sooryavanshi has especially drawn widespread attention, with several cricket experts and former players suggesting that he could soon earn a place in India’s T20I setup following a string of fearless and impactful innings.
Reflecting on the selection challenge, Ashwin highlighted the depth currently available in Indian cricket, particularly in the batting department. He suggested that if Kohli had still been active in the T20I format, selectors would have faced an even bigger headache in balancing experience and youth in the playing XI. Kohli, one of India’s most successful T20 batters, stepped away from T20 internationals after helping India secure the T20 World Cup title, ending a celebrated career in the shortest format.
