The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced the appointment of former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach for Pakistan’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, alongside revealing a revised squad for the two-match contest.
The decision marks a notable transition for Sarfaraz Ahmed, who led Pakistan to several key international victories during his playing career, including the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy triumph. His elevation to a coaching role is being seen as part of the PCB’s short-term strategy to stabilise the Test setup ahead of a busy international calendar.
According to the board, Sarfaraz will take charge specifically for the Bangladesh Test series as an interim arrangement, working closely with the national selection committee and support staff. The PCB stated that his leadership experience and deep understanding of the Test format were key factors in the decision.

Alongside the coaching announcement, the PCB also named a squad featuring a blend of experienced Test players and emerging talent. The selection reflects an effort to balance continuity with fresh options, particularly in batting and spin departments, which are expected to play a crucial role in subcontinent conditions.
Selectors have reportedly focused on form and domestic performance while finalising the squad, with several players rewarded for consistent performances in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and recent first-class fixtures. The inclusion of younger players also signals the board’s intent to build depth in red-ball cricket.
The Bangladesh Test series is expected to serve as an important preparatory assignment for Pakistan, offering opportunities to test combinations and assess bench strength in challenging conditions. The matches will also be closely watched as part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to improve consistency in the longest format.
With Sarfaraz Ahmed stepping into coaching duties for the first time at this level, attention will be on how his leadership experience translates from the field to the dugout as Pakistan begin a new phase in their Test cricket planning.
