India batter Jemimah Rodrigues has highlighted the intense emotional pressure surrounding India-Pakistan cricket encounters, as the two sides prepare to face each other in their opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday in Birmingham. Speaking ahead of the high-voltage clash, Rodrigues said the rivalry carries expectations that go far beyond the cricket field and is shaped by strong public sentiment.
Rodrigues revealed that the pressure of an India-Pakistan match is deeply felt by players, citing how external voices amplify the significance of the contest. She recalled her early experiences of the rivalry, noting that even everyday interactions reflect the intensity of public emotions. “Even my building watchman says, ‘Lose to anyone, but not against Pakistan,’” she said, describing the widespread passion fans associate with the fixture.
The India batter acknowledged that such encounters come with heightened scrutiny but stressed that the team remains focused on its broader objective of winning the Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time. According to Rodrigues, the squad is prioritising long-term goals over individual match pressure, with preparations centred on consistency and mental strength throughout the tournament.

She also spoke about the team’s use of visualisation techniques as part of their preparation. Rodrigues said the squad regularly imagines lifting the trophy and reinforces positive outcomes as part of their mental conditioning. She added that such practices were introduced during previous campaigns and continue under the current coaching setup led by Amol Muzumdar.
Rodrigues further emphasised the importance of training under pressure, explaining that the team deliberately creates challenging match-like scenarios during practice sessions. This approach, she said, helps players adapt to high-pressure moments in actual games and builds confidence in handling unpredictable situations, particularly in the fast-paced T20 format.
Head coach Amol Muzumdar also urged the team not to focus excessively on individual opponents, stressing that any player can become a match-winner on a given day in T20 cricket. He emphasised composure and execution under pressure, as India aim to begin their campaign strongly while balancing expectations in one of the sport’s most high-profile rivalries.
