Ishan Kishan stole the spotlight with both his bat and his celebrations as Sunrisers Hyderabad sealed a place in the IPL 2026 playoffs with a five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. The wicketkeeper-batter produced a match-winning knock of 70 off 47 balls before playfully performing CSK’s iconic “Whistle Podu” gesture in front of the Chennai crowd after the win.
The result proved crucial for Hyderabad in the race to the playoffs, as the franchise successfully chased down a target of 181 with six balls to spare. Kishan remained the central figure throughout the chase, combining aggressive strokeplay with composure under pressure. Following the victory, he celebrated animatedly with teammates and gestured toward sections of the home crowd, drawing loud reactions from spectators at Chepauk.
Earlier in the evening, Chennai Super Kings posted 180 for 7 after being asked to bat first. The innings was anchored by Dewald Brevis, who top-scored with 44 runs during a middle-order rebuilding effort. However, CSK struggled to fully capitalise during the death overs as Hyderabad’s bowling attack maintained control in the latter half of the innings.

Pat Cummins led SRH’s bowling effort with three wickets, while Sakib Hussain picked up two important dismissals. The disciplined bowling performance restricted Chennai from crossing the 200-run mark on what appeared to be a good batting surface. Despite brief partnerships, the hosts were unable to produce the late acceleration that could have significantly increased the pressure on Hyderabad during the chase.
In response, Hyderabad lost wickets at intervals but remained firmly in control due to Kishan’s fluent innings. He found support from Heinrich Klaasen, who contributed a gritty 47 runs in a crucial partnership that steadied the chase after a few quick dismissals. The duo rotated strike effectively and punished loose deliveries, gradually shifting the momentum away from Chennai.
Kishan’s innings featured a mix of aggressive drives, sweeps and calculated boundary-hitting as he countered both pace and spin with confidence. His ability to control the chase under pressure proved decisive, especially with the playoff qualification scenario adding extra importance to the contest. SRH eventually completed the chase comfortably in the final over, sparking celebrations among players and travelling supporters.
After the match, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said his side remained in the contest until the closing stages and praised the players for their effort despite the defeat. He admitted that Chennai missed opportunities during key phases of the game but credited the team for continuing to fight in a challenging season marked by injuries and the absence of important players.
Gaikwad also highlighted the support received from Chennai fans throughout the campaign and praised Sanju Samson for his performances during the season. The defeat dealt a major blow to CSK’s playoff hopes, while Sunrisers Hyderabad strengthened their credentials as serious contenders for the IPL 2026 title with a composed and clinical away victory.
