The race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has intensified with less than two weeks remaining in the league stage and no team having officially secured qualification yet. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans currently lead the table with 14 points each from 11 matches, placing them in strong positions to advance to the knockout stage.
Punjab Kings slipped to 13 points after suffering a three-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals on Monday. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals remain firmly in contention with 12 points each from 11 games. Even Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals are mathematically alive in the playoff race, although both sides face increasingly difficult qualification scenarios.
Since the IPL expanded to a 10-team format in 2022, 16 points have largely been considered the benchmark for playoff qualification. Teams finishing fourth with 16 points qualified in the 2022, 2023 and 2025 seasons, while the 2024 edition was the only exception when four teams ended on 14 points and net run rate decided the final playoff berth. According to projections from the league’s official broadcasters, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad each currently hold around an 80 per cent chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

Punjab Kings are estimated to have a 62.5 per cent qualification probability, while Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals remain closely matched at 42.7 per cent and 41.8 per cent respectively. Kolkata Knight Riders are considered outside contenders with an 11.6 per cent chance, while Delhi Capitals’ hopes stand at just 1.2 per cent. Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer expressed frustration after his side failed to defend 210 against Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium. Iyer blamed poor fielding and ineffective bowling execution for the team’s fourth consecutive defeat, despite strong batting performances from Priyansh Arya and the skipper himself. He said the total was at least “30 runs above par” given the challenging pitch conditions and admitted that Punjab’s bowlers had failed to maintain disciplined line and length under pressure.
Delhi Capitals successfully chased down the target in 19 overs thanks to aggressive half-centuries from David Miller and captain Axar Patel. Iyer also revealed that he had considered introducing spinner Yuzvendra Chahal earlier but opted to rely on seamers because of the assistance available from the surface. With the playoff race entering its decisive phase, every remaining match is expected to carry major significance for teams battling for the final four spots.
