Former India chief selector MSK Prasad has called for continuity in the Indian T20I leadership structure, urging the BCCI not to remove Suryakumar Yadav from the captaincy despite his recent dip in form, including an underwhelming IPL 2026 season. Prasad’s comments come amid growing speculation in sections of the media that the selectors may consider a change in leadership just months after Suryakumar led India to a T20 World Cup title. While acknowledging concerns over current form, he argued that leadership should not be evaluated solely on short-term performance fluctuations.
In a column, Prasad emphasised that India currently lacks an obvious long-term replacement for the T20 captaincy role and warned that frequent changes at the top could disrupt the team’s tactical direction and dressing room stability. According to him, maintaining continuity is essential to preserving the culture and identity that has been built under the current leadership setup. He further suggested that the focus should shift towards structured succession planning rather than immediate replacement. Prasad proposed that the team management and selectors begin grooming a pool of future leaders within the current setup, allowing them to gain experience under Suryakumar’s captaincy across different series and conditions.
Among the names he highlighted as potential future T20 leaders were Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Ishan Kishan. He suggested that these players could be gradually introduced into leadership roles as deputies, helping India build a deeper leadership pipeline without destabilising the current structure. Prasad stressed that such an approach would allow India to develop continuity in decision-making while ensuring that younger players are exposed to leadership responsibilities in a controlled manner. This, he argued, would reduce pressure on any single successor and ensure a smoother transition when the time eventually comes for a change.

He also cautioned against what he described as “emotional decisions,” warning that reactions driven by temporary dips in form could undermine long-term planning. According to him, elite players often experience fluctuations in performance, but leadership decisions should account for broader contributions, including tactical acumen, dressing room influence, and experience in high-pressure situations. Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership has been widely credited for India’s recent success in T20 cricket, particularly their World Cup triumph.
However, his individual form in franchise cricket has sparked debate about whether leadership and batting roles should be reassessed separately.Prasad’s intervention adds to an ongoing discussion within Indian cricket circles about balancing performance-based selection with structural stability in leadership roles. While no official decision has been announced by the BCCI, the debate reflects broader concerns about transition planning in India’s T20 setup ahead of future ICC events. For now, the former selector’s stance is clear: stability over disruption, and long-term planning over reactive change.
