Virat Kohli’s attempt to shut down rumours about liking a picture of actress Avneet Kaur has unexpectedly triggered a meme storm across social media. The cricketer issued a clarification on Instagram Stories, stating, “While clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction.” The phrase has since become viral, inspiring a wave of jokes and memes on X (formerly Twitter).
Kohli’s statement followed claims that he had liked a photo posted by a fan page of Avneet Kaur. The interaction, now no longer visible, caused quite a stir, with Instagram users tagging his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, and even targeting Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in comment sections.
Social media was quick to respond with wit. “Kids: my account got hacked. Men: my PR agent accidentally liked a post. Legend: the algorithm mistakenly registered an interaction,” quipped one X user. Another wrote, “Normal people: Galti se picture like hogayi. Kohli’s Insta admin: ‘While clearing the feed, the algorithm mistakenly registered an interaction.’ This is why corporate lingo is important.”

Some responses were skeptical. A user claiming to be a software engineer commented, “As a software engineer for 4 years, this is a completely senseless post. Instagram wouldn’t mistakenly register a like. This isn’t someone’s computer science final project.”
Kohli didn’t mention any individual in his post but appealed for understanding and urged followers not to make assumptions. Despite his diplomatic tone, the internet seems more entertained than convinced, turning a minor social media misstep into meme gold.
From cricket fields to meme pages, it appears even algorithms aren’t safe from scrutiny when you're one of the most followed athletes in the world.
