India received a significant update on opener Abhishek Sharma ahead of their T20 World Cup clash against Namibia, with the batter discharged from hospital after being treated for a stomach infection. However, his availability for Thursday’s match remains uncertain, according to teammate Tilak Varma.
Abhishek had been hospitalised for two days following the infection, raising concerns within the Indian camp. Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Tilak Varma confirmed the 25-year-old’s discharge but indicated that a final decision on his participation would be taken closer to match time. “Abhishek has been discharged today. There is still time to decide on his participation for tomorrow’s game,” Varma said.
The left-handed opener endured a difficult start to the tournament, registering a duck against the United States in India’s opening fixture in Mumbai on Saturday. He did not take the field thereafter, with wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson stepping in as a substitute while India were fielding.

Abhishek, known for his aggressive stroke play at the top of the order, is considered an important component of India’s T20 setup. His absence could prompt a reshuffle in the batting lineup, especially as India look to build momentum in the group stage of the tournament.
The team management is expected to monitor his recovery closely before making a final call. With the high-intensity schedule of a global tournament, fitness and match readiness will likely play a key role in determining whether Abhishek returns to the playing XI against Namibia.
