Security forces in New Delhi tightened measures across parts of the city on Monday following protests sparked by the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in ongoing military strikes by the United States and Israel. Demonstrations, particularly around mosques and community centres, prompted law enforcement agencies to deploy additional personnel and increase vigilance near diplomatic missions and sensitive localities.
The unrest in the national capital was part of a wider reaction in several Indian regions after Iranian state media confirmed the death of the 86‑year‑old leader in a joint U.S.–Israeli airstrike. Large groups of mourners and activists gathered in southeast Delhi near Babul Ilm Mosque and other areas to offer prayers, hold posters of Khamenei, and voice anger at the reported attack, chanting anti‑Israel and anti‑U.S. slogans.
Officials said the Delhi Police placed additional forces in strategic parts of the city, including outside diplomatic missions and districts with significant Shia populations, to prevent potential escalation or violence. Authorities also advised residents to remain calm and avoid being drawn into incidents that could disrupt public order.

The protests in Delhi were echoed in other Indian cities and regions. Demonstrations also took place in Lucknow, Jammu, and Kashmir, where large crowds congregated to mourn and condemn the killing. In Jammu and Kashmir, authorities stepped up security deployments and diverted traffic in protest areas to manage crowds and maintain law and order.
The heightened domestic tensions come amid a broader surge of unrest across the Middle East and beyond. State and international media report that Khamenei’s death has triggered protests in multiple countries, rallies by Shia communities, and a series of global reactions to the intensifying conflict between Iran and U.S.–Israeli forces.
India’s central government has been closely monitoring the situation, balancing internal security concerns with foreign policy considerations as the regional crisis unfolds and worldwide demonstrations continue in response to the high‑profile death of Iran’s Supreme Leader.
