Meghalaya is advancing its ambition to become India's "Football Capital" with the construction of the Mawkhanu Football Stadium Complex in New Shillong Township, a ₹732 crore project featuring a 40,000-seater FIFA-compliant arena dedicated exclusively to football. Unlike multi-purpose venues such as Kolkata's Salt Lake or Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which include athletics tracks that distance spectators from the pitch, Mawkhanu prioritises optimal viewing with close proximity, uninterrupted sightlines, and an intense atmosphere aligned with modern international standards. The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, valued at ₹642.60 crore for core works, targets completion within 36 months, with the balance covering land preparation, utilities, and contingencies suited to Shillong's challenging hilly terrain and high rainfall.

The design incorporates climate resilience, including over 80% roof coverage to shield fans during monsoons, a natural grass pitch with advanced drainage and irrigation, broadcast-grade floodlighting, modern dressing rooms, media facilities, and hospitality zones. These features position the stadium to host ISL matches, national team games, AFC events, and FIFA youth tournaments from inauguration. Beyond football, the complex envisions a multi-utility hub with a clubhouse offering swimming pools, gymnasiums, tennis and squash courts, snooker rooms, and restaurants to ensure year-round revenue through memberships, concerts, and cultural events.

The project promises significant socio-economic impact, projecting nearly 15,000 direct and indirect jobs in construction, operations, hospitality, and ancillary services. It aligns with Meghalaya's ₹2,800 crore sports infrastructure investments, leveraging football's deep cultural roots for youth empowerment and regional identity. Architectural elements draw from local bamboo craftsmanship, blending global standards with indigenous aesthetics.
