On her 70th birthday, January 15, 2026, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President Mayawati made a firm announcement in Lucknow that her party will contest all upcoming elections independently, including the crucial 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. Addressing a press conference at the BSP headquarters, she emphasized that there would be "no confusion" about this decision, declaring the party would fight both small and big contests on its own without entering any alliances.
Mayawati justified the independent strategy by citing past experiences where alliances weakened the BSP's base while benefiting partners. She asserted that the people of Uttar Pradesh, distressed under previous Samajwadi Party and current BJP governments, are ready to bring BSP back to power. The party aims to secure a full majority government in the state, reviving its 2007 success when it won independently under the 'sarvajan hitay, sarvajan sukhay' (welfare of all) formula.
The announcement comes amid speculation about pre-poll alliances and follows Mayawati's outreach to upper castes, particularly Brahmins, whom she promised full respect, representation, and livelihood opportunities under a future BSP regime. She accused rival parties of neglecting marginalized sections and running misinformation campaigns against BSP's social coalition.

UP BJP President Pankaj Choudhary described the decision as an "internal matter" of BSP, while political analysts see it as Mayawati's bid to consolidate her core Dalit support and rebuild broader appeal ahead of 2027. The move has sparked renewed discussions on Uttar Pradesh's evolving electoral dynamics.
