Italian President Sergio Matarella on Tuesday sent warm Republic Day greetings to President Droupadi Murmu, highlighting the rapid expansion of India-Italy relations. Matarella noted that the bilateral partnership is poised to deepen further, offering mutual benefits across economic, scientific, and cultural sectors.
In his letter, the Italian President emphasized shared values between the two nations, including democracy, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to a rules-based international order. He cited converging interests such as regional stability along the Indo-Mediterranean arc and cooperation in addressing major global challenges.
Matarella also underscored the importance of the Italy-India Joint Strategic Action Plan, noting that it has opened new avenues for collaboration in trade, investment, research, innovation, defence, space, connectivity, counter-terrorism, and education. He expressed hope that synergies between the two nations will strengthen through high-level institutional and political exchanges.

The Italian President highlighted that relations between India and the European Union also stand to benefit from this growing partnership. Frequent bilateral visits, joint projects, and intensified people-to-people contacts are expected to reinforce economic, cultural, and scientific ties, according to Matarella.
The statement comes a month after Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani visited New Delhi, where PM Narendra Modi reaffirmed that the India-Italy partnership “continues to get stronger.” Modi noted that the deepening engagement not only benefits both countries but also contributes positively to the global community.
India and Italy formally elevated their relations to a Strategic Partnership during Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s 2023 visit to New Delhi. The ambitious long-term agenda is now being operationalized through the 2025–2029 Italy-India Joint Strategic Action Plan, marking a new era of cooperation across multiple sectors.
