In a key political development ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expanded his Council of Ministers on Sunday, inducting six new ministers and promoting two Ministers of State. The reshuffle, carried out at Raj Bhavan in Lucknow, is being seen as a strategic effort to strengthen caste balance, regional representation, and organisational outreach within the state government.
Governor Anandiben Patel administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly inducted ministers during the ceremony. Former Uttar Pradesh BJP president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary was the first to be sworn in as a Cabinet minister, highlighting his increasing importance within the party, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh. He was followed by Manoj Pandey, a Brahmin leader and former Samajwadi Party MLA who recently joined the BJP, marking a notable political shift.
Other ministers inducted into the expanded cabinet include Surendra Diler, Krishna Paswan, Hansraj Vishwakarma, and Kailash Rajput. In addition, Ministers of State Ajit Pal and Somendra Tomar were elevated. The changes reflect an attempt by the government to maintain administrative efficiency while balancing representation from different social and regional groups across the state.

Political observers note that the inclusion of Manoj Pandey is aimed at strengthening the BJP’s outreach among Brahmin voters, while the elevation of Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary is expected to reinforce support among Jat communities in western Uttar Pradesh. The reshuffle is widely seen as part of the party’s broader social engineering strategy ahead of the crucial 2027 elections.
The latest expansion fills all remaining vacancies in the state Cabinet, which is constitutionally allowed to have a maximum of 60 ministers including the Chief Minister. Prior to this reshuffle, the Yogi Adityanath-led government had 54 ministers. With the new appointments, the administration now aims to project a more inclusive and regionally balanced leadership structure.
Earlier expansions of the Cabinet had also been used to strengthen political positioning ahead of major elections, including a similar reshuffle in March 2024 before the Lok Sabha polls. The latest move continues that pattern, reflecting the ruling party’s focus on consolidating its support base while preparing for a high-stakes electoral contest in 2027.
