On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a scathing attack on the Congress leadership, attributing the catastrophic partition of India in 1947 to their "lust for power and appeasement politics." Speaking at a commemorative event in Lucknow, attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, state ministers Swatantra Dev Singh and Ravindra Jaiswal, and BJP state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, Adityanath described the partition as a tragedy that fractured the unity of "Sanatan and ancient India."
The event, held to mark the observance initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021, aimed to reflect on the "horrific upheaval" of August 14, 1947, and connect younger generations with the nation’s tumultuous history. Adityanath recounted the immense sacrifices of freedom fighters who endured colonial oppression, only for the Congress leadership to allegedly orchestrate a division that birthed Pakistan—a "hostile neighbour" designed to perpetually challenge India.
Adityanath claimed that the Congress’s policies fueled unprecedented violence on the eve of Independence, particularly in regions like Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Multan in what was then West Pakistan. He accused the Congress of enabling a targeted campaign that rendered these cities devoid of Hindus and Sikhs, resulting in one of the darkest chapters in global history. An estimated 15-20 lakh people were massacred, and millions were displaced across West and East Pakistan, he noted, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian crisis.

The chief minister criticized the then-Congress government for failing to provide relief, rehabilitation, or citizenship pathways for displaced Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians, and Jains. He further lamented the absence of memorials or museums to honor the victims, accusing the Congress of neglecting the scars of partition.
Adityanath praised Prime Minister Modi for instituting Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, calling it a vital step to heal the wounds of affected families and educate the youth about the true cost of division. He also lauded the Citizenship Amendment Act, introduced under Modi’s leadership, for granting citizenship to refugees from West Pakistan who settled in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of India post-1947.
The remarks have ignited debates across political circles, with Congress leaders yet to respond to Adityanath’s allegations. As India reflects on its past, the observance underscores the enduring impact of partition and the importance of acknowledging its lessons for future generations.
