Chaos erupted in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday when women MPs from the Opposition blocked seats of ruling party members, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chair. The protest forced the adjournment of proceedings and led to the cancellation of the Prime Minister’s scheduled reply to the Vote of Thanks after the President’s address.
The demonstration was triggered by the suspension of eight Opposition MPs and restrictions on Rahul Gandhi from quoting unpublished memoirs of former Army Chief MM Naravane. Several ministers, including Kiren Rijiju, intervened to de-escalate the situation and requested the MPs to end their blockade.
The women MPs carried a banner reading “Do what is right”, emphasizing their demand for fair treatment of the suspended members. The standoff reflected heightened political tensions in the House and drew sharp reactions from both ruling and Opposition benches.

When the House reconvened at noon, Opposition members continued raising slogans against the government regarding the 2020 standoff with China. Amid the noise, proceedings were again disrupted, and the motion of thanks remains pending in the Lok Sabha.
Observers noted that the blockade appeared to be a pre-planned move, highlighting the Opposition’s growing assertiveness. Senior ministers credited quick thinking and calm negotiation for preventing the situation from escalating further.
The Lok Sabha has been adjourned until tomorrow, and discussions on the motion of thanks are expected to continue. The incident underscores rising tensions in Parliament and the challenges of maintaining decorum amid political protests.
