Tamil cinema superstar and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay kicked off his high-stakes ‘I am Coming’ campaign in Tiruchirappalli on Saturday, signaling a bold challenge to Tamil Nadu’s political establishment ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The actor-turned-politician, addressing his first-ever statewide political tour, is expected to intensify his attacks on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), aiming to position TVK as a transformative force in the state’s politics.
Vijay’s campaign will begin with a vibrant rally at 10:35 AM in Tiruchirappalli, a symbolically significant location in the Cauvery delta region, often considered a lucky launchpad for political campaigns. His itinerary includes subsequent rallies in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, wrapping up by 7 PM. The TVK has rolled out a custom-built campaign bus adorned with images of Dravidian icons C N Annadurai and M G Ramachandran, emblazoned with the slogan “I am Coming.” The vehicle, equipped with a public address system, reflects Vijay’s intent to connect directly with the masses.
The campaign’s logo, unveiled on Friday, features a smiling Vijay with outstretched arms, symbolizing his embrace of all Tamilians, alongside the tagline: Unga Vijay Na Varen, Vagai Soodum Varalaru Thirumukirathu (“Your Vijay, I am Coming; history of victory returns”). The imagery evokes the historic electoral triumphs of 1967, when Annadurai’s DMK ousted Congress, and 1977, when M G Ramachandran’s AIADMK defeated DMK, hinting at Vijay’s ambition to topple the current regime.

Party sources reveal that Vijay’s speeches will blend broad critiques of state and central governance with region-specific issues, drawing on feedback from TVK office-bearers. Emphasizing Annadurai’s principle of Makkalidam Sel (“Go to the people”), Vijay aims to present himself as a leader rooted in public aspirations, standing “as one among them.” His campaign is poised to highlight alleged failures of the DMK-led government under Chief Minister M K Stalin and the BJP’s policies at the national level.
Tiruchirappalli’s selection as the campaign’s starting point carries historical weight, with past parties leveraging the region’s political resonance to launch successful bids. Vijay’s entry into politics, backed by his massive fanbase and star power, has sent ripples through Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with TVK positioning itself as a fresh alternative to entrenched parties. As the 2026 elections approach, Vijay’s ‘I am Coming’ tour could redefine the state’s political narrative, promising a fierce battle for power.
