Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has officially named him as its chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the party announced on Friday. The decision was formalized through a special resolution passed during TVK’s State Executive Committee meeting at its Panaiyur headquarters in Chennai, marking a pivotal step in Vijay’s political journey.
Vijay, addressing the meeting, firmly ruled out alliances with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), positioning TVK as a distinct force against both. “We are not like DMK or AIADMK to ally with BJP for political gains. TVK will lead an alliance against DMK and BJP, with no room for compromise,” he stated, emphasizing opposition to divisive politics and corruption. The party granted Vijay full authority to decide on potential alliances, signaling a strategic yet independent approach.
TVK also outlined ambitious plans, including a large-scale state conference in August and public meetings in villages to promote its ideology of social justice, state autonomy, and inclusivity. Vijay will embark on a statewide tour from September to December to connect with voters, aiming to enroll two crore members. The party condemned the BJP-led Union government’s handling of farmers’ protests and demanded the retrieval of Katchatheevu island, while urging the Tamil Nadu government to abandon the Melma SIPCOT industrial expansion plan.
