The early trends in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026 have triggered fresh speculation about a possible alliance between Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. With TVK showing a strong debut performance, discussions have emerged in political circles about its potential role in government formation, especially if no party secures a clear majority.
However, before the elections, both TVK and AIADMK had firmly ruled out any alliance. Public statements from leaders on both sides dismissed such speculation, and the two parties contested the election independently. This clearly indicates that there was no pre-poll understanding between them.
Earlier, there were informal discussions between the two parties, but these talks reportedly failed due to major disagreements. TVK had demanded a dominant role in the alliance, including projecting Vijay as the chief ministerial candidate and seeking a large share of seats. AIADMK, being an established party, was unwilling to accept these conditions, leading to a breakdown in negotiations.

The situation has now changed due to the emerging election trends. If the final results lead to a hung assembly, both parties may be compelled to reconsider their positions. In such a scenario, political necessity rather than ideological alignment could drive them towards a post-poll alliance.
In conclusion, while a pre-poll alliance between TVK and AIADMK is not possible, a post-poll tie-up cannot be completely ruled out. Any such alliance would depend purely on seat numbers and the need to form a stable government, making it a strategic and practical decision rather than a natural political partnership.
