Trinamool Congress (TMC) state general secretary Kunal Ghosh has filed a defamation lawsuit against the father of a 34-year-old doctor raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The case, lodged in a Kolkata court on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, stems from the father’s allegations that Ghosh bribed CBI officials to derail the investigation into his daughter’s brutal killing.
Ghosh, also TMC’s spokesperson, claims the father’s statements to the media, accusing him of paying off CBI investigators to “settle” the case, are baseless and defamatory. Last week, Ghosh sent a legal notice demanding an apology, giving the father four days to respond or face legal action. “I respect his pain, but he cannot spread lies or be manipulated to defame others,” Ghosh said, challenging the father to prove his claims in court. “On whose information are you making such false accusations?” he added.
The doctor’s rape and murder, committed by civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who was convicted, sparked outrage. Initially probed by Kolkata Police, the case was transferred to the CBI following a high court order. However, the victim’s father has slammed the CBI for failing to explore gang-rape allegations, accusing the agency of aligning with the Mamata Banerjee-led government’s narrative. He specifically claimed Ghosh met CBI officials to influence the probe.

The lawsuit has intensified tensions, with the father’s accusations highlighting distrust in the investigation. As the legal battle unfolds, the case reignites debates over justice and accountability in one of Kolkata’s most high-profile tragedies, leaving the public questioning the integrity of both state and central agencies.
